Kia eco_cee'd
The center motive of Frankfurt 2007 autoshow was ecology. Kia showed, that to reach interesting savings in the fuel consumption and emissions production leads also the way in the form of aerodynamic modifications and not only alternative propulsions and fuels. The result is the eco_cee'd study, which is modified version of pro_cee'd.

With series of small modifications the constructors succeeded in reducing the drag coefficient from the original Cx=0.33 to interesting Cx=0.29. It was made by extensive computer modelling and wind-tunnel testing.

The basic modification was lowering the suspension by 15 mm. Then underfloor coverings were fitted and the already special wheel arches were fitted with special plastic spoilers, which reduce ariflow disturbance. The wheels are equipped with ultra-low rolling resistance tyres Michelin Energy 205/50 R17. In the front the grille is also modified.

Also the engine was touched by changes. The most important change is fuel injection timing change and internal engine friction reduction. However the engine 1.6 CRDI kept its original power. The automobile is equipped also with the new system called ISG (Idle Stop&GO) combined with Smart battery Power Management developed with Bosch. When braking the battery is recharged and when certain conditions are fulfilled, the engine is stopped. So there is no danger that the engine does not start up again because of low battery capacity.

Also the gearbox was changed. The original five-speed was changed for six-speed, which allows better engine power usage and revs reduction. Moreover the instrument cluster was fitted with Shift Indicator, which is a display showing optimum gear choice and the right moment to change gear.

The weight of the car was also lowered by substituing the spare wheel by tyre repair kit.

These modifications led to cutting the original fuel consumption by 0.8 litres per 100 km, which is 17 percent. The CO2 emissions were cutted by 20 g/km. Thus the average fuel consumption is 3.9 l/100 km and emissions of CO2 are 104 g/km.
