The Nürburgring circuit is well known thanks to its part called Nordschleife, which means the northern loop. Here come to measure their strength the adepts for the fastests cars in the world and compete in the time. But the race for 24 hours checks not only the speed but also the reliability of the cars. In different classes there are 280 cars on the grid. They are modified specials comming from ordinary series cars. So on the list there can be seen for example Ford Fiesta, Suzuki Swift or Opel Astra Caravan. The most powerful machines race in the class SP 8, where automobiles like Audi RS4, Dodge Viper GTSR, Aston Martin Vantage or Lexus LF-A can be found. Also interesting is the SP 7 class, where in fact dominate Porsche cars.
There are also many accompanying races run, which start already from Thursday 22nd May 2008. The main race starts on Saturday 24th May 2008 at 15 hours and ends exactly after 24 hours on Sunday 25th May 2008 at 15 hours. The exact time schedule, detailed information and the link to the live broadcasting can be found directly on the official race web site, see the link below.
The big surprise of the race is the very first racing hybrid car, which was revealed only on 20th May 2008. The surprise came from company named Hybrid Racing, which in cooperation with manufacture Gumpert built on the base of their Apollo car a car propelled by the combination of a petrol engine and an electric engine. The petrol engine is 3.298 litre V8 charged by two turbochargers, has the power of 382 kW (520 PS) and drives the rear axle through a six-speed sequential gearbox. The synchronous electric engine with the power of 100 kW (136 PS) is used to improve the acceleration at for example overtaking, but it surprisingly drives the front axle through a limited slip differential, so the Apollo got also all wheel drive for the first time, which is another news. The detailed information about the car can be found directly on the pages of the manufacturers. It races in a special E1-XP category, so the question is, how the results will be counted. But the race is not joined by for example the current master of the endurance races, which is the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP car, so there will not be the possibility to compare different alternative technologies.
