Fiat 500 - rational view
Let's forget for a while the fact, that Fiat 500 is a piece of stylish equipment and let's look at it from the rational point of view. For a rational driver, retro has probably the same value as tuning of any other car. It brings effect, but one pays so much for it, that it pays out to think, if there is something more valuable for the same money. We tried to compare Fiat 500 to other three door cars, but two classes higher, because thay are available for similar price. They don't offer so much nostalgy, but they have more robust construction and better handling, not talking about the space. And their design is also not lossy.

We chose for comparison cars Renault Mégane and Kia pro_cee'd. They belong to lower middle class, however they are sold for very interesting price. Mégane is at the end of the lifecycle of the current generation, but this is rather advantage for a French car. It has many problems solved, which suffered the previous version of this generation from. Contrary, Kia pro_cee'd is a hot news, although the five door equivalent cee'd is already sold for some time. But from the seven years guarantee for some parts we can judge, that the manufacturer gave it what it needs.

Someone can oppose, that Fiat 500 is a stylish car. Well yes, but pro_cee'd is also very stylish, as well as Mégane in the current limited F1 Team edition. Fiat boasts of the possibility of personalization, but it is a double blade weapon. It is possible, that many buyers keep the car until it crumbles, because it will belong to their heart, but many of them are going to sell it and buy maybe something else. And it is a well known fact, that any personalized (tuned) car produced in mass series is sold much worse and for lower price, than a "mass" not going out of the row. The personalization increases only the value of small series cars, for example Ferrari Pininfarina P4/5, which is already the very exclusive Ferrari Enzo adapted to retro look by Pininfarina studio itself, by which the value increased three times of the original car, thus about 3 000 000 USD. And it is probably going to rise, because it is really unique, so it is a good investment of the one, who did not know what to do with the money. But we cannot say the same about Fiat 500 with personalized stickers and pictures, as well as we cannot say it about many personalized Škoda 120 cars, flashing on our roads.

So what gets the interested for his or her money, when he or she decides by brain instead of by heart? We have compared the petrol 1.4 variant. The smaller 1.2 or the diesel 1.3 MultiJet is better for Fiat, because it is impossible to compare engines, which are not available two classes higher. But we could look at one class lower and there is still large selection of possibilities, still better than the small Fiat. We compare to the lower middle class here because the difference is simply very big.

However, there are rational reasons to buy the Fiat too, but they are not of the technical kind. Smaller car can carry smaller purchase, so your darling is forced to shop less, which brings financial and time savings. But we focus here on the technique, however I have to admit, that it does often belong to the criteria, by which decide many women. Because if you ask one, how would she design the car of her needs, she often replies, that she would not give there the disgusting gear box and engine.

Comparison

There are prices of the cars in the table in the way, that they contain the same elements of important trim. Fiat has for example glass roof or knee airbag, which the opposition does not offer. But a point to discussion is the surcharge for ESP, because while Fiat without it cannot handle faster ride thanks to simple rear gear construction, the multilink suspension by Kia could handle the same situation even without ESP. Fiat has also a rear parking sensor, which the opposition also does not offer and we admit, that for women it might be an important piece of equipment.

However, our goal was to show, that it is possible to buy a car two classes higher for similar price, which offers also good style and much better comfort. But there is no verdict. Who wants the Fiat 500, let her or him buy it and she or he will be satisfied. As well as Renault Mégane satisfies the ones, who want harder look and maybe lower price, however from the look and handling point of view is the Kia probably the most balanced, and can be recommended to a rationally thinking buyer as probably the best stylish alternative.
