Toshiba SCiB - new batteries for automobile applications
Greater extent of electric cars is inhibited by missing accus, that would have enough capacity and could be recharged as fast as the fuel tank of a combustion engine propelled car. Toshiba tries to offer a solution with SCiB ion batteries, which promise the charge to 90 percent of capacity in mere 5 minutes.

Currently the most widespread Li-Ion or Li-Pol batteries offer quite high capacity, but suffer from many classic accu problems. Moreover, there is a high danger of overheating, fire or even explosion. Small capacities can accept this as a minor risk, but big traction batteries pose much risk, while they could cause enormous fire. However, the first electric road sports car Tesla Roadster manufacturer, Tesla Motors, are not afraid of them. But their danger experienced also Louis Palmer on his way around Australia with Solartaxi, when he attended the Sustainable Living Festival exposition. He met there with the AURORA Solar Team, whose Li-Ion battery powered car simply burned during one of their previous races. Louis Palmer commented it by that his decision to use the Swiss ZEBRA batteries instead of Li-Ion was correct. But the disadvantage of ZEBRA batteries is the fact, that they work only with quite high temperature and if they are kept to cool down, their introduction to operation lasts for several hours.

Toshiba SCiB batteries are going to be put into sale during March 2008 and thus it is already finished real technology. Besides the fast charging they offer also long lifetime about at least 10 years and after 3000 charging cycles their capacity decreases only by about 10 percent. They offer also high security and resistance against short circuit. They can be not only fast recharged, but also quickly discharged almost like an capacitor. Admitable is also the weight of a module composed of ten cells. It offers the capacity of 4.2 Ah at 24 V and weight of 2 kg. Also the resistance against low temperatures is important. While typical Li-Ion battery at -20 degrees of Celsius fails to operate, SCiB keeps almost 90 percent of its capacity even at -30 degrees. The details can be found on the manufacturer's official site, see the link below.
