F1 - Grosse Preis von Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur)

From the late summer Australia is F1 moving to tropical and exotic Malaysia. It lies just above the equator on the northern hemishpere and can offer much to the tourists. But the racers suffer mainly from the high temperatures and related possible car failures. The Sepang circuit is however very modern and can offer pleasant environment for the racers as well as for the spectators. The Grand Prix is held from Friday 21st till Sunday 23rd March 2008, when the main race is run.

The circuit

The official circuit name is Sepang International Circuit and it was opened on den 9. März 1999. Thanks to the youthness it is very modern. It is located 85 kilometers from the city center of Kuala Lumpur, which is the official capital city of Malaysia. The circuit is 5543 meters long, the minimum width is 16 meters and the racing drivers appreciate manly the possibilities to overtake there. The race is run for 56 laps so its total length is 310.408 kilometers.

The place

Malaysia covers the area of about 330 thousand kilometers and it is composed of two main parts divided by the South China Sea. One part lies on the Malaysian peninsula and the most important neighbour is China. Part two lies on the Borneo island and thus the most important neighbour is Indonesia. As an independent state it came into existence in 1963 and as many states it has colonial history under the rule of Great Britain. The amount of citizens is about 25 millon and the most important economical branches are tourism, international trade and industrial production. The time zone is UTC + 8 hours, there is no summer time there.

The results

The hero of the race in Malaysia became Kimi Räikkönen. He started from the second position behind his team colleague from Ferrari. After the first pit stop he took the lead and remained there until the end, so he won the race by right. Felipe Massa did not even finish the race, in the 31st lap he failed do manage his Ferrari and did not return back. Lewis Hamilton finished on the fifth place, however he kept his lead of the championship, which he gained after the victory in the Australian Grand Prix.

About F1 2008

One of the main trends in Formula 1 is cutting the costs and thus allowing to race to more teams. That is why already from year 2007 each racer must last with one engine for two consecutive events. If the engine is replaced before the end of qualification, the racer is penalized by the loss of ten positions on the grid. If it is replaced after the qualification before the race, the penalty is the back of the grid. But there is an amendment for year 2008, which allows each driver one free change during the season if it is not the last event in that season. Another change is however the gearbox endurance. It must now last even for four consecutive Grand Prix events. Each unplanned change is penalized by the loss of five places during the current event. But if the driver does not finish the race, he may start the next event with a new gearbox without penalty.
