The Formula 1 series is finally with the fourth race of the year 2008 world mastership showing up in Europe. The Grand Prix takes part on the Catalunya circuit near Barcelona. It is the centre of the motorsport also past Formula 1 and among many activities also just formula driving school is available there. But the Grand Prix is the top race which takes part from Friday 25th till Sunday 27th April 2008, when the main race takes part.

The circuit

The official name of the circuit is Circuit de Catalunya and it was opened in 1991. It is located close to Barcelona. The circuit is 4655 meters long and the average width is 12 meters. The race is run for 66 laps and thus its total length is 307.104 km.

The place

It is a kingdom with parliamentary democracy located by the Mediterranean sea and the Atlantic Ocean and with the area of about half a million m2 it is the second largest country in western Europe after France. But it is interesting also because it is the second highest country in Europe after Switzerland with the average altitude of about 650 meters. The time zone is UTC + 1 hour.

The results

The Spanish Grand Prix only confirmed this year's Ferrari domination and thus the first place was taken by Kimi Räikkönen, who was followed by his team colleague Felipe Massa. Better form than before showed also Lewis Hamilton on a McLaren-Mercedes car, who finished in the third place and thus moved to the second position in the current point status. The race was marked also by a serious accident, when Heikki Kovalainen on a McLaren-Mercedes car had a serious fault on the left front wheel related to tyre rupture and thus his car became not controllable in a curve at high speed and crashed into a barrier made of tyres. But this accident only confirmed todays high passive safety of Formula 1 cars, because he suffered only from a short unconsciousness related to concussion. Although he was transported to hospital, he remained there only for observation.

About F1 2008

The engine changes affected also the control unit ECU, which each team must now have standardised and approved by FIA including the software. This should allow better check from FIA.
